On Saturday, 30 May, at 8:00 PM, Story Owl will host a live tribute to José Afonso, performed by Rogério Braga.
José Afonso — or Zeca Afonso, as he remains engraved in the memory of so many generations — was far more than one of the great voices of Portuguese music. He was a teacher, poet, composer, singer-songwriter and a figure deeply connected to freedom, social conscience and human dignity.
His songs move through the real country: work, poverty, hope, resistance, tenderness, injustice and the desire to build a fairer world. With a voice that seemed simple, yet carried immense truth, José Afonso left us a body of work that continues to move, unsettle and call us to attention.
After his tributes to Sérgio Godinho, in September 2025, and to Rui Veloso, earlier this year, Rogério Braga returns to our bookshop-café for an evening dedicated to this essential figure in Portuguese music and history.
It will be an intimate session, surrounded by books, music and memory, revisiting songs that remain alive — not only as musical heritage, but as an act of freedom.
