Romeo + Juliet (1996), directed by Baz Luhrmann, is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy, in which the story of forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet is transposed to the fictional city of Verona Beach.

It keeps the original verse text, but sets it in a contemporary world of gangs, cars, guns and music video-style aesthetics, creating a strong contrast between classical language and a modern setting.

With performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, the film explores themes of passion, violence and fate, while preserving the tragic ending that has made the play one of the most famous love stories of all time.
