Uncle Montague lives alone in a large house, where visits from his nephew give him an audience for a collection of frightening tales. Each story opens onto a different terror, while the atmosphere of the house becomes increasingly unsettling.

As the tales accumulate, another narrative begins to emerge behind them. Chris Priestley links the individual stories through the mystery of their teller, with David Roberts’s illustrations accompanying this English-language paperback in the Tales of Terror series.
