Coletivo de Histórias – Creative Writing Cycle (Lesson 3)

Class 3: Settings and Atmospheres — 1h30

A session dedicated to using the environment as the engine of the narrative. We begin by revisiting the previous challenge to maintain consistency. Then comes a guided reading of The Selection and A Court of Thorns and Roses to observe how setting creates mood and context. We then move on to two practical exercises.

Your writing instructor for this workshop:

Beatriz Rocha is a journalist by training, a writer by vocation, and a protagonist by nature. She learned to read at the age of five, driven by a childhood competition (her cousin had already read Harry Potter, and she refused to be left behind). Since then, she has never let go of books — or of the desire to turn experience into narrative.

The daughter of an actress on hiatus and a musician, she grew up surrounded by art, though she quickly discovered that singing wasn’t an option and acting only works if she plays herself. Writing became her stage, her voice, and her character.

She has been published in magazines such as Caras and once ran an Instagram page dedicated to cinema — because the arts have always inspired her to speak and to write. In her workshops, Beatriz helps each participant find their own voice — with humor, courage, and a sharp eye for the details that make a good story come to life.
